The Punctuation Police visited my site!

Author: GuyMcLaren  |  Category: I say

I was visited by an anonymous person who showed their lack of intelligence and understanding of real issues.  It claims that “THERE are 2 types of spam. There is junk, virus and nonsense spam and then there is people who are just trying to make a living. And us ADULTS have the choice of using THEIR services or buying THEIR products or just deleting THEIR mails.”

Wrong I say. Spam is spam unless it is not spam. Anyone that sends an unsolicited email to a list of people with no way to unsubscribe is a spammer. If you have never spoken to me and you send me a boilerplate email offering to do business with me you are spamming me. I wrote about Alan Sollarsh, Spammer,  a webdesigner that sold cheap phone calls a few weeks ago, with no track record of web design offering sites for R 800.00.

The anonymous braveheart also said “firstly before you bad mouth a dude that is probably just trying to make a living and feed his kids, I suggest you check your spelling and grammar. I would be embarrassed if I was you. “I get loads of spam and their are two types theirs good spam and theirs bad spam.”

Alan sent me an email offering me who advertises webdesign a website for only R800.00, It’s pretty obvious Mr Solarsh is harvesting emails from the web, with no forethought. Is Mr Solarsh trying to feed his family? Without a doubt but then so are people who get locked up for stealing, burglary and other petty crimes. Am I suggesting that Solarsh is a criminal? I won’t make any such allegation but the way I understand it, there is legislation making spamming a crime in most countries including South Africa.

As an excuse, I am trying to feed my family is not going to cut it in court.

I notice that the anonymous person did what every good troll does in an argument, deflect the argument from the facts to some stupid argument about punctuation. Here it is, Alan Solarsh spammed me and no comma, fullstop or quotation mark will change that. You dear anonymous person are brain dead and no spelling error, typo or capital letter will change that.

Honey I don’t think it’s my brain thats dead. I think the reality is you don’t like to be told off. Oh, you do like insulting others but you can’t handle the tables being turned.
If I remember correctly, it was you who coined that phrase of there being 2 types of spam. So its only your 2 types that count?
If this Alan was so clueless and had no chance in YOUR industry why is he worrying you so much? I welcome my competitors “spamming” me as it gives me a headsup as to what they are offering and helps me know whats going on in my industry. I’d say thanks to him.
I actually think I may try him out.
Oh by the way, whats that other guys name who also has more than 1 industry he dabbles in … Would it be Sir Richard Branson? I wish Alan good luck in his new industry of web designing. Actually I wish him luck in every business he may be in. I hope that if he ever enters my industry, I will give him a warmer welcome!

Wow, seems like I got here just in time for the barney?

Regardless of how many types of spam there are to nitpick about and how many spelling mistakes are made battling it, the law is quite clear on the matter.

A copy of the ECT Act is available on-line via the Government’s web site: http://www.info.gov.za/view/DownloadFileAction?id=68060

Unfortunately our glorious government have yet to figure out hyperlinked text, so the link points to a PDF of a scanned document. (Ouch)

Section 45 deals with spam. There is a useful primer for dealing with spam mails here: http://internet.org.za/#Spam (Warning, possible out of date page)

If the spam originates in ZA there is a good chance that the sending network is a member of ISPA. If it is you can lodge an official complaint with ISPA: http://www.ispa.org.za/

Thanks for this Diaan, I believe it reinforces my theory that spammers are scum and break the law
