This is a subject guaranteed to get me hot under the collar, I know that most drivers in Nelspruit are courteous, in fact no the majority are total morons. I know this because I travel these roads regularly. I do the school run and see stupidity that is hard to credit.
I watch people refuse to let someone join the lane in front of them because it will delay them by .0000005 seconds. I watch people overtaking on suburban roads because they might get to the next intersection 2 seconds earlier. I watch people overtaking on blind rises and curves and I cannot think of any amount of time that you can save that justifies that risk.
I remember in the 70’s a test was done from Johannesburg central to the Airport to see how much time could be saved. I think the car that broke all the rules, speeding, weaving and overtaking got their about 2 minutes faster than the one who followed all the rules and some of that time was made up on the highway from Bruma to the Airport.
Nelspruit is less that 10 km’s from end to end. At 60 km/hour subject to no intersections you can travel that in 10 minutes. at 90 km / hour you get to do it in 6 and 2/3 of a minute. Is it really worth all that effort to save just over 3 minutes. Remember this is in ideal conditions, throw in a bit of traffic and a robot or 4 and that becomes even less valuable.
Risking your life to save a few seconds is just lunacy.
