Family is a burden to bear in most instances. Friends you choose, family are foisted on you by an unkind universe. You may think I am being uneccessarily harsh when I write these things but the facts are that when I was in the UK, my family adored me. You know that whole absence makes the heart grow fonder thing.
I made the mistake of assisting my brother with a website. Now as we all know the web designer is reliant on the client to supply the information or content. It is unfeasible to expect me to understand every business I design a website for. In fact as a geek I know very little about some of my clients business and in fact some of the time I am grasping in the dark.
I try and understand my clients businesses and their needs but factually I cannot have an understanding of chemicals and compounds without spending a lot of time in the “market” as such.
I work for a tyre company, a chemical company, a few lodges, a hardeware shop, a civil engineering design house. All of these people know their industries. I don’t. I cannot be expected to write knowledgably about all the subjects.
I cannot create content for a site without the input from the client. It is just not feasible. Today I got information that my brother who owns the site http://onsitetools.co.za is calling me names because his site remains incomplete.
Facts are that we asked for his input, We wanted him to come and sit with us months ago to do the final layout(theme) and add some content. He told another client that I was incompetent, well he used a more injurious term. In 5 months he has not visited me, He has not mentioned his website. I asked him to come and sit with me then, and he has not. Am I incompetent because he has failed in his part of the contract?
Things learned from this experience.
1. Never do business with family ever!!!
2. Web design is a shit industry because you get blamed when clients don’t do their part.
I went out in a Bell 206B3 the other afternoon to take some photo’s for CFA Charters’ brochures and their stand at INDABA. The ride was rather interesting. We went and photographed all the falls on the panorama route. I am not putting all the pics of the falls here. I am putting up the photographs I took of some other interesting stuff.
